Description

This image depicts the effort of humanity as it reaches out into the universe from their home world. Although, the long and short of it is, it was really about time I did some full illustrations of figures. I Still managed to employ a large landscape in there though.

A little more info about the composition as it may be a bit ambiguous - The figure is standing on a very high peak surrounded by civilisation. It's symbolic of how people might stand as high as possible on their world, looking up into the heavens wishing to journey further.

Original Res 4000x4000 ~

Freehand Painted in PhotoShop CS
Photo reference used for the figures pose (thank you Lisa)
Rough block model created to help with the perspective.

 01/23/04 @886

Wonderful, I thought she was falling too from the start. Think I figured out why.
It comes from the cloth. The one covering her risen hand almost seems to rise like it would if she just started falling. Im not a pro at prespectives though so I might be wrong.
Aside from that an excellent work, one wishes he had your skills =)

Avatar Axterxes

 01/24/04 @067

Well....She would look like she is falling because her clothing is going outwards and upwards, towards the edges of the image....If she were rising, the clothing would PROBABLY look like it is set down and behind her form, and in a distance from her hand.

I like her expression. This is modern indeed, the feel is otherworld, and yet, humane.

 01/24/04 @169

although the perspective is executed very well, i feel the sense of scale is distracting. perhaps a distorted or even better, exagerrated perspective on the figure and the mountain in their respective real sizes would help convey the pose and emotion.

but thats just my tidbit. apart from that, the pose IS really good, and despite the environment, manages not to be halo-ed by the landscape composition. and nice rendering. +5

One can't look at this piece and not feel something moving about it. It makes me feel as though I'm up in the heavens and she is reaching out to me. I want to reach out ad pull her up. Kudos!+9

.........This is your best work! The perspective is amazing. Color use is amazing. You truly show you’re a master of digital painting in this piece and color. I really can’t tell that she is standing though. Maybe making the feet visible to show she is on the ground. Also would I probably try making the peak a little crisper and more saturated to show it's not in the distance. At first I thought she was falling. Anyway keep up this exception work. It’s a great influence for any digital painter.

Gary you have created a perfect metaphor. She looks like she's falling and reaching out for something that used to be there. Beautiful and sad, like she cares enough to keep reaching but is forever suspended, hoping..

Another masterpiece. I love how you used the bluish-purple for the cloth. It contrasts perfectly with her warm-colored skin. The perspective is nice, as is the atmosphere. You're awesome at foreshortening, and I think you should do another person-piece next. I'd be interested to see what you can come up with... :)

is this some sort of city below her? because, with the roundedness of the area surrounding her, it comes across as if she is standing inside some sort of a tube, stretching upward. this kinda throws the lighting off a bit. I kinda wish the transition between the grassy area and the futuristic structure(s) were more linear, as opposed to the rounded shape that you have used. unless of course, she is inside a tube (like the one in star wars where luke was almost killed by vader ;)) haha. otherwise, good job! ;)

What I like most about this one (besides the overall skill with color and detail) is how you managed to give the impression of heighth.

At first the figure appeared to be sub-par to my eye, but then I realized that the hand, skin, and dress are flawless, it's only the hair that detracts from the rest of the work. It is very wiry and stiff looking, and looks rather matted where it curls up under her chin.

Also the eyes look fake to me, as if they are painted on.
