Description

So much of my non VA work I create I cannot show on GFX due to copyright issues tied to the unreleased projects I am working on (I WISH I COULD)... Anyway - here is something I can display - it's not very exciting but hey... Not all art is a much fun as I would like.

This image is a promotional piece for a new Model Impreza called the "Type-25" www.Type-25.com

-The car was originally a studio photograph. (See below)

-The backdrop is painted and the I added painted lighting onto the car to seal it into the comp.

The image took about 4 hours to complete. All PhotoShop CS - Original Res 5500x2900

original photo and a 1280 desktop image below.

I really like what you did. The background was painted nicely, although I feel parts of the car should have been blurred as the background was. It would seem that at this high-speed, high-intensity setting, only parts of the car could be defined as detailled. unless of course, this is going to be used in an actual ad, where you'd want to view all portions of the car in as much detail as possible.

hehe i'm rambling. nice job.. :)

Well done. "Simple" works are often painstakingly complex. The work with reflected light on the vehicle is outstanding. Only adverse comment is that wheels are in motion, but not the remainder of the car, so wheels would have to be turning faster than the car moves, an impossibility. Stop action on one would stop action on the other.

OK, you sure got me fooled there, thinking this is easy stuff, but when I saw the background I was truely impressed :) I can feel the speed this thing is going at! Don't agree that the car has to be blurred as well, the 'crispness' creates a very nice effect.

This is not actually true. The blurred background suggests that the viewer is in fact travelling at the same speed as the car. With a relative speed of 0mph the car would in fact appear motionless. The wheels, however, would still be turning.

Aside from which the visual effect is far stronger with the crisp and clear image.

Good job, I love it! ;)

Is there anything you *can't* do? Excellent background.

Great display of versitilty, Gary. You've done a great job with the car's metalic surface and succeeded in making it look like the real thing, even down to the decal on the front. Of course, being American it's very akward to see a car on the "wrong side of the street". I'd hate to see it in a head-on colison. :)

wow. this IS beautiful. But i am going to be perfectly honest: I like your other pieces a lot better. Personally, i am mesmerized by your futuristic city scapes, and your other work such as "Spirit Rising". Still, this warrants the highest grade i can give: +7

labrisa and wildhound either mistated or misunderstood my point about the car being in sharp "focus," the wheels turning, and the background blurred.

I agree, the car, which is the focus of the piece, should be sharply defined in "stop action" so as to highlight it. To give the illusion of speed, this means the background is blurred. I never stated otherwise. I agree with wildhound, this also makes the illusion that the viewer is traveling at the same speed as the car.

My comment on the moving wheels was only partially correct. In actuality, a car going 0 mph (even in relative motion) will not have its wheels still turning, unless it's on the garage lift. As you said, everything is in relative motion, but the wheels move the car.

Since this piece simulates a pan and zoom photo, however, WILDHOUND IS CORRECT AND I AM WRONG. In panning, the photographer moves the camera in a lateral plane with the car, blurring the background, and giving the illusion of the viewer travelling with the car. As he pans, however, the wheels are still rotating and moving the car. Thus, the motion of the car is "stopped" (relatively) but the wheels are both rotating as well moving in the lateral plane with the car (the dircection of the camera pan) and will appear blurred due to the rotary motion, even though the wheels are moving laterally at the identical speed of the car.

I still like the piece.

If it helps at all - this image is depicted from a hypothetical second vehicle - travelling at the same speed and direction as the subject car - hence there are no pans or zooms - it is simply, a focuses view of a fast moving vehicle, therefore - blurred wheels and background - but the car is clean and crisp.

The key is to keep the focus on the subject - in action - people do not buy cars from a blurred shape. :)
