Description

Concept Painting

This image was created as a guide for modelling and texture artists, demonstrating the look and feel of an enviroment. The intended sensation being that it's tempting to go towards the window, but somehow there is also a threatining feeling over there.

This image was created in ~7-8 hours using PhotoShop CS + Intuos 2 Tablet. Original res 1600x2450

Below the image are some process stages.

Also, a link to a larger process page and a detail shot

I will be doing some more VA work soon!

I really like the composition. Nice touch with the drop shadow - it really helps the presentation. Great attention to detail and lighting, Keep up the great work .

Do you have any books, because I'd buy in a heartbeat. I am blown away by how someone can paint so photorealistically. This is wonderful work!! You have a new fan, ANTIFAN.:)!!!

Stunning! I really enjoy seeing your process as well. The board in the right hand lower corner looks like it is transparant--I don't know if this was intentional...

Great lighting!

Great job for 1 point perspective. Really nice mood. Mind my asking if you used any filters? seems like there is a little noise in there...

Thank you so much for including the stages of progress. I want to clinck on each and study it in more detail! :) I really like the light cast onto the floor and the texture of the wall to the left. Nicely atmospheric.

CrazyFrazee

 05/07/04 @149

That is incredible. Simply stunning.

But I actually have a criticism. I didn't notice it at first, so it isn't a very big deal, but the reflected light on the floor bugs me a bit. You did a quick brush early in the process, which gives it a messy, refracted look for certain, but as it gets closer to the viewer, it turns into that zig-zaggy line. It just doesn't seem to go with the clean, photorealistic style of the rest of the image.

Did I mention I am in awe?

Thank you so much for including the stages of progress. It's fascinating to study the changes from one to the next. My favorite parts of this piece are the light cast onto the floor and the texture of the wall to the left. Nicely atmospheric.

Avatar emarts

 05/07/04 @166

Forget about the window, I'm afraid of what might be under those stairs!

No critique, just a question. The vertical lines in the image don't go straight up and down but get closer together as they reach toward the top of the image. How did you know to do that? It makes it look very photographic. I would not have thought to do that.

Marley

 05/07/04 @219

actually emarts i have been picking up on the same technique on a few images across the net, and thinking the excact same thing ^^.Thats incredible brush work gary and amazing lighting.Just bloody brilliant, great to see a new image from you too!.

Thanks for the quick feedback everybody :)

In answer to some questions:

To the perspective question - the guide lines were draw on by hand on a separate layer - they are fairly rough - just to let me know where the structure should go loosely.

Also, there were no filters used per-say, I did use a photo of some concrete as a template to work the detailing in - kinda fun.

The image was intended to be fairly rough - it was one days work - normally I would take 3-4 on a full illustration.

Holy crap. O_O I thought it was a 3D render at first glance, though the broken wood bits at the right kinda gave it away. Still, bloody AMAZING textures and light, it could send chills down my spine. *shudder* You achieved the intended sensation as in the description so, so well.
